This sign for a pub is common in towns with important churches. Beverley has a minster and a large sister church of St. Mary and in Medieval times the town had many pilgrims who came to visit the shrine of St. John in the Minster.
There is an information plaque on the wall about the pub and its sign.
THE
CROSS KEYS
This fine Grade II listed building dates from the 1760s.
In 1770, it was advertised as a 'well accustomed inn
or public house, known by the sign of the Cross Keys.
Cross (or crossed) keys are the emblem of St. Peter
who held the keys to the gates of heaven.
By 1791, coaches ran from The Cross Keys to Hull.
In 1889, the inn had a commercial room, four bedrooms
and domestic quarters on the ground floor,
with cellars below, plus seven more bedrooms above.
There was also stabling for 20 horses, with room for
another 30 in adjoining stables.
