Peace and Friendship Park came into being in 2018 when the statue of the founder of Halifax Edward Cornwallis was removed after it was revealed his part in the ethnic cleansing of the native population. As the British Governor of Nova Scotia he issued a scalping proclamation against Mi'kmaw men, women and children the same year he established the city. Municipal council made change official on June 9, 2020 with an opening held on National Indigenous Peoples Day

The neighborhood park is 300' wide and 360' long. The base where the Cornwallis Statue was is located where a number of paved paths cross in the center of the park. The park has benches along the paths and a playground on the south end. The Vytaiemo Monument honoring Ukrainian immigrants has become a makeshift shrine.
