EN: Next to a jet fountain in Costa Nova, in Aveiro, there is a bust dedicated to Gabriel Ança that says "Ilhavo aos arrais de Gabriel Ança 1933

"Gabriel Ançã was born in Ílhavo, on January 8, 1845, the son of very humble parents. Despite having attended Professor Ratola's school, he chose to follow the life of his father, João José Ançã, who was a fisherman. From a very young age, Gabriel Ançã began to prove his courage, swimming relaxed on the Costa Nova beach, always taking a good breath. At the age of 18, he crossed the Tagus River by swimming. But a year earlier, on that same river, he showed his abilities. He was then working on an English barge that ran aground and rescued all those who were shipwrecked, including a child.

At the age of 19, he was already Arrais. Around this time, he saved 35 castaways from a boat that capsized in Costa Nova. But the rescue, as it became known, took place in October 1880. The French steamer "Natave" sank 2 km from Praia da Torreira. Despite the fury of the sea, Gabriel Ançã alone managed to save 17 people. For this feat, he received a medal, given by Councilor Manuel Firmino. During his lifetime he saved 123 people.

In 1886 he was decorated by King D. Luís, with a medal from another for distinction and a prize awarded to merit, philanthropy and generosity.

He died in February 1930, at the age of 85, peacefully at home, but sad because he would never see the sea again.

Gabriel Ançã, a man without culture, was born to fight the sea and never turned his face to danger. I used to say that the sea is cowardly because it attacks almost always from behind. He was a person who never cared about material goods, caring more about others in his class than, many times, about himself."
