Wilhelm Brundert (* 12. Juni 1912 in Magdeburg; † 7.

Wilhelm Brundert (* 12 June 1912 in Magdeburg; † 7 May 1970 in Frankfurt am Main) joined the SPD in 1930 and studied law and political science in Halle an der Saale and Frankfurt am Main, obtaining his doctorate from the University of Hamburg in 1935. In Berlin, after his dismissal from the civil service, Brundert worked for an auditing firm. In the resistance against National Socialism, he worked in the Kreisau Circle with Adolf Reichwein and Carlo Mierendorff, among others.
In 1946, after the forced unification of the SPD and the KPD, Brundert became a member of the SED in Halle, where he was Ministerial Director in the Ministry of Economics and Deputy Minister for Economics and Transport in the Saxony-Anhalt state government. From 1948, he was also a professor of economic, tax and administrative law at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Halle (Saale). His political convictions repeatedly brought him into conflict with state power. On 28 November 1949 he was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison for alleged economic sabotage and "social democratism" in the "Dessau Show Trial" on 29 April 1950.
After seven years, he was released into the Federal Republic of Germany and came to Hesse, where he became head of the State Finance School in Rotenburg an der Fulda in 1958. From 1962 to 1964, he served as State Secretary and Head of the State Chancellery of the Hessian State Government. On 2 July 1964, he was elected Lord Mayor of Frankfurt am Main, where he quickly earned the reputation and respect of the population and influential circles in politics, business and society. When he was re-elected on 19 March 1970, Brundert was already seriously ill, suffering from the consequences of malnutrition and ill-treatment during his imprisonment in the GDR. On 7 May, Brundert died at the age of 57 after contracting pneumonia. He was given a grave of honour at Frankfurt's main cemetery (plot II 204a).
