The watchtower is a small tower built in a setback, in relation to the wall, in relation to a facade. This place was used as a sentry box for a watchman in charge of observing and warning of any suspicious approach of men, by land or by water, just like here in Bayonne : it is placed at the point of the confluence of the Nive and the Adour rivers....

La reconstruction de l’Echauguette illustre la volonté de la Ville de sauvegarder et de mettre en valeur son patrimoine historique.
Cette tour de guet contrôlait jusqu’au début du XXe siècle la remontée des navires dans le port et l’accès d’un côté à l’autre de l’Adour par la fameuse porte de France. Elle s’effondre dans le fleuve en 1937. En 2000, la municipalité décide de ressortir ce monument symbolique du fond des eaux. Les travaux de consolidation et d’habillage des berges ont duré près de quatre ans. L’édifice a retrouvé sa place d’origine, à la confluence de l’Adour et de la Nive, depuis juin 2004. Elle est désormais le refuge des amoureux, ou des balades « mamies et petits chiens ». On la visite, et elle sert de joli point de vue pour les photos extérieures.

The reconstruction of the Echauguette illustrates the city's desire to safeguard and enhance its historical heritage.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, this watchtower controlled the passage of ships into the port and access from one side of the Adour to the other through the famous Porte de France. It collapsed into the river in 1937. In 2000, the municipality decided to raise this symbolic monument from the bottom of the water. The consolidation work and the dressing of the banks lasted nearly four years. The building has been back in its original place, at the confluence of the Adour and the Nive, since June 2004. It is now the refuge of lovers, or of "grannies and little dogs" walks. We visit it, and it is used as a pretty point of view for the external photographs.
