Coatham Green is an area of sandy soil that has been colonised by plant life and has fixed the sand dunes in place.

At first sight it looks like it is just an area of grassland, but in fact there is a wide range of plants in amongst the grass and in turn this gives home to a variety of insect life.

As this area was on the edge of town, it was ripe for development but the population of the town campaigned to save it. The area is now registered as a village green and is managed for wildlife.

The green is also one part of a long stretch of coast land where sand dunes have been stabilised by the plant life.
