Hoch oberhalb der Brunnenstadt Gerolstein liegt die Ruine der mittelalterlichen Löwenburg. Als Namensgeber der Burg Gerhardstein, heute Löwenburg genannt, gilt Gerhard VI. von Blankenheim (1314 – 50). Die Burg wurde im pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieg 1691 zerstört und nicht wieder aufgebaut. Heute erinnern noch die 11 m hohe Schildmauer sowie Reste von Wohngebäuden an ihre einst große Bedeutung als Herrschersitz. Die Burgruine ist ganzjährig frei zugänglich und bietet einen wunderbaren Blick über Gerolstein, das Dolomitenmassiv und das Kylltal.

Tipp: Die Burgruine Löwenburg liegt nur wenige Meter abseits des Eifelsteigs sowie am Vulkaneifelpfad Keltenpfad. Ein kurzer Abstecher auf das historische Gemäuer belohnt mit einem schönen Panoramablick.

High above the fountain town of Gerolstein lies the ruin of the medieval Löwenburg. Gerhard VI of Blankenheim (1314 - 50) is considered to be the namesake of Gerhardstein Castle, today called Löwenburg. The castle was destroyed in the Palatine War of Succession in 1691 and was not rebuilt. Today, the 11 m high shield wall as well as remains of residential buildings remind us of its once great importance as a seat of power. The castle ruins are freely accessible all year round and offer a wonderful view over Gerolstein, the Dolomite massif and the Kyll valley.

Tip: The Löwenburg castle ruins are located just a few meters off the Eifelsteig trail as well as on the Vulkaneifelpfad Celtic Trail. A short detour to the historic walls rewards with a beautiful panoramic view.
