NRHP Registration Form"The Norton-Orgain House is a 2-story frame vernacular center passageI-house. It is in the core of historic Salado, Bell County, Texas, and was constructed in approximately 1872 and has Victorian era and early 20th century alterations. The building faces west and consists of two main elements: a rectangular 2-story central hall volume and a 2-story ell addition on the rear of the house. Prominent architectural features include a 2-Btory gallery
across the front of the house and brick chimneys at the north and south gable ends.
Like most of the historic houses in Salado, the Norton-Orgain House utilizes the L-plan with a symmetrical five bay front, and transitional detailing. Previously ineligible for inclusion in the multiple resource nomination due to its deteriorated
condition and loss of integrity, it has been carefully restored inside and out, using extensive photo documentation and is once again a representative example of local vernacular architecture. Its central location on Main Street makes the house highly visible to all who live in Salado and to the many who pass through. Its early ownership by three prominent Salado citizens, along with its familiarity of form and style make the Norton-Orgain House an integral part of the settlement and development of Salado as do the other members of the Historic Resources of Salado.
