Brühl (mm). Der bekannte Mammutbaum auf dem Parkplatz an der Kölnstraße ist abgestorben und muss gefällt werden - das teilen die Stadtwerke mit.
In den letzten Jahren hatte Baum vermehrt Trockenheits- und Welkesymptome gezeigt, die auf ein sukzessives Absterben des Baumes hinwiesen. Das Ziel des Bebauungsplanes von 2008, sowohl die erforderlichen Stellplätze zu schaffen als auch den alten Baum zu erhalten, habe man nicht erreichten können.
Bei einem Ortstermin im Frühling letzten Jahres mit Stadtverwaltung und StadtServiceBetrieb wurden zum Erhalt des Baumes Maßnahmen vereinbart - dreimaliges Wässern pro Woche, eine regelmäßige Erhaltungsdüngung und fortwährende Kontrolle des Baumes mit Dokumentation.
Außerdem wurde mittels Baumgutachten die Stand- und Verkehrssicherheit des Baumes geprüft und es gab in diesem Frühjahr einen sogenannten „Zugversuch“ der den Nachweis erbringen sollte, dass die Verkehrssicherheit auf dem Parkplatz sichergestellt ist.
Alle Untersuchungen hätten letzten Endes aber zu dem Ergebnis geführt, dass der prägnante und wertvolle Baum abgestorben ist und nicht mehr gerettet werden kann.
Im Mai hat dann die Umweltkommission der Stadt Brühl den Baum besichtigt und eine Empfehlung zur Fällung des Mammutbaumes ausgesprochen. Der Ausschuss für Bauen, Umwelt und Klimaschutz stimmte der Fällung zu.
Im Juli 2022 erhielt der Eigentümer - die Stadt Brühl - die Genehmigung zur Fällung des Baumes. Verbunden mit der Fällung ist die Auflage anschließend die Neupflanzung eines großwerdenden Laubbaumes mit einem Stammumfang von 35 bis 40 Zentimeter am selben Ort vorzunehmen.

Sequoia has died

In recent years the tree had shown increasing symptoms of drought and wilting, which indicated that the tree was gradually dying. The goal of the development plan from 2008, both to create the necessary parking spaces and to preserve the old tree, could not be achieved.
At an on-site visit in spring last year with the city administration and city service company, measures were agreed on to preserve the tree - watering three times a week, regular maintenance fertilization and ongoing monitoring of the tree with documentation.
In addition, the stability and traffic safety of the tree was checked by means of tree reports and there was a so-called "tensile test" this spring, which was intended to prove that traffic safety in the parking lot is ensured.
In the end, however, all investigations had led to the conclusion that the striking and valuable tree had died and could no longer be saved.
In May, the environmental commission of the city of Brühl inspected the tree and made a recommendation for the felling of the sequoia. The Committee for Building, Environment and Climate Protection agreed to the felling.
In July 2022, the owner - the city of Brühl - received permission to fell the tree. In connection with the felling, the requirement is then to replant a large deciduous tree with a trunk circumference of 35 to 40 centimeters in the same place.
