Laurel County, Kentucky was established in 1825, and originally formed from Rockcastle County, Clay County, Knox County and Whitley County. The county was named after Mountain laurel trees that are prominent in the area. There are a reported 60015 residents living within the county’s 436 square miles. In 2016, the average weekly wage was reported as $646, and the annual median income was reported to be $36570. The current poverty rate stands at 21.8%.
