Jack Benny (real name: Benjamin Kubelsky) began his career in show business as a violin player on the vaudeville circuit. He changed his name a couple of times to avoid confusion with other performers finally settling on Jack Benny shortly after World War I. Though a decent violin player, his aversion to practice eventual began to show but by that time he had discovered a new niche: comedy. Benny’s comedy routines slowly displaced his violin playing but he always kept the violin around as a prop. As a kid I remember seeing Jack Benny on a number of TV shows and he always seemed to have a violin in his hand.

Though he appeared in a number of movies in the 1920s and continued to make cameo appearances in films throughout his career, Benny’s main media was radio and television. His popular radio shows of the 1930s and 40s easily transitioned into television in the 1950s and 60s. After his show was finally canceled in 1964, Jack Benny continued to appear on variety and talk shows right up until the time of his death in 1974.

If you walk along Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, you have a better than average chance of stumbling across Jack Benny’s star as he has three of them: one each for motion pictures, radio and television. He is also a member of the Television Hall of Fame and the National Radio Hall of Fame.
