"On 7 May 1822, a fire broke out in the centre of Imst, at Leinplatz, which was repeatedly fanned by changing winds and raged for 18 hours. The fire in Imst is one of the largest fire disasters in the history of Tyrol. Almost the entire village was devastated and around 2000 people were left homeless. Wooden roofs and stables had provided plenty of food for the flames, and the lack of efficient extinguishing facilities had done the rest.
"The parish church, St. John's church, the entire Capuchin monastery, the castle where the district court and the district office were located, the community hall, the schoolhouse, the Strehl factory buildings, even the Calvary Church on the nearby high mountain lie in ashes".
This is what the Imst market magistrate wrote in a report that appeared in the Boten von und für Tirol und Vorarlberg immediately after the fire.

Reconstruction of the destroyed market was quickly begun and thanks to a great wave of willingness to help, the work was largely completed after only a few years. However, the consequences of the catastrophe were still felt for decades to come."
