Long Description:
The Reformed Church or Irene-Emma-Elisabeth Church is a former church building in Valkenburg in the Dutch South Limburg municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul. The church is located on Plenkertstraat in Plenkert next to a mountain wall of the Cauberg in the Geuldal.

When at the end of the 19th century tourism in Valkenburg started to get going, with Protestants from all over the Netherlands coming to Valkenburg, the reformed community in Gulpen, of which Valkenburg was part, decided to build a new church with a view to to the increasing stream of overnight guests.

In April 1890, the drawings by architect W.J. Blijenberg from Maastricht discussed. However, the design is attributed to architect Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers.

On March 23, 1891, the public tender took place. On October 11, 1891, the church was completed and consecrated by Rev. Ovink. Three weeks after the dedication, Rev. Ovink retired and the congregation became vacant.

On August 27, 1939, the church was given the full name of the newborn Irene, with the permission of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard.

In 1944 Valkenburg was liberated and the church was heavily damaged.

After the Second World War, the church became too small due to the growth of the municipality and the tourist flow. They looked for other possibilities that were found in the Kloosterkerk.

The church has been withdrawn from worship since 1967 and has been used as a restaurant ever since. The Maastricht ring considered it sufficient if only a service was held in Gulpen, so that the newly opened church remained almost closed. The congregation was not abandoned thanks to Rev. P.A. Hugo van Rossem from Beek who preached there.

The church was sold in 1970. The building was used as a catering facility. In 2006, for example, it housed a Turkish restaurant and a steakhouse until 2018.

On September 18, 2018, the church was heavily damaged by fire
