First Congregational Church - South Windsor, CT - NRHP Historic Districts - Contributing Buildings on Waymarking.com

In 1691, the settlers west of the Connecticut River petitioned the colony's General Court in Windsor for having their own congregational church. In 1694, their first church was constructed. Timothy Edwards, the father of the famous theologian Jonathan Edwards was their first minister. This church was replaced in 1714 and the current church, their fourth, was built in 1846. In the 1950's an addition to the rear of the was constructed.

The Greek Revival style church has a set of steps leading up to a portico entrance. The pediment above the portico is supported by four Doric columns. A stained glass window is located on top of the The central entrance.

Rising from the gable roof is a four tiered steeple. The bottom tier is a square tower. The second tier is a tower with louvered windows flanked by four Doric piasters. The third tier an octagonal belfry with louvered windows with rounded tops. The fourth tier is an octagonal spire topped with a weather vane.

The north side has four rectangular triple hung windows. The south side has an entry porch at the first and second bays. Two double hung windows on the second level above the entry porch and two large triple hung windows on the third and fourth bays. The 1950's addition at the rear is horizontal to the main block of the church.
