The Philip Chapin House was built in the Italianate style by architect/builder A.G. Kellogg in 1867. The house was financed by William Bushnell as a wedding gift to his daughter Amelia, who was the wife of Philip E. Chapin. Chapin family owned several factories. Philip's father donated the land upon which the house was built. Philip Chapin purchased the Kellogg Machine Works and formed the Chapin Machinery Company to manufacture knitting machines.
The very ornate square building has three progressively smaller tiers. The bottom tier has a set of steps leading up to wraparound porch supported by ornate square columns. The central double door entrance is framed by an ornate rounded arch. A pair of double windows flank the entrance.
The second tier has a projecting central window within a rounded arch echoing the door below. The window is flanked by a pair of rectangular windows framed by a arch and flanked by green shutters. A section below the hip roof contains a central arched window beneath a gable roof. A cornice with windows and section separated by decorative wood columns runs beneath the roof-line. At the roof is a central cupola with double arched windows.
