This pillar is situated in an obscure location in the flat countryside of the old county of Kincardineshire, now the southern part of Aberdeenshire. It lies within two miles from the border with Angus on the western edge of Drumhendry Plantation to the west of the village of Luthermuir in an area that was heavily planted with trees since the pillar was constructed. The pillar, given its woodland situation, is covered in lichen and moss, but is otherwise in good condition. With its low height (45 metres above sea level) and woodland south and east, the only views are the open prospect across farmland to the north-west.
STEEPNESS: None.
TERRAIN: Long clawing grass, bushes and some fallen trees.
ACCESSIBILITY: A minor road runs a hundred yards or so to the east. The track to West Mains of Drumhendry farm is a similar distance to the south.
NAVIGATION: From the road to the east it is a westward trudge through the forest to the other side where the pillar lies close to the fence. From the farm track it is possible to avoid the woods, following the edge of the arable field north-eastwards to reach the pillar on the other side of the fence.
DANGER: The terrain of a pathless forest, with bushes and fallen trees to be avoided.
