Die Drachenfelsbahn ist die älteste noch aktive Zahnradbahn Deutschlands. Sie fährt seit 1883 von Königswinter auf den Gipfel des Drachenfelses, einem Berggipfel im Siebengebirge. Er ragt 245 Meter über den Rhein, auf dem Gipfel befinden sich eine Aussichtsplattform und die Reste einer Burg. Der Nibelungensage nach hat hier der Held Siegfried mit einem Drachen gekämpft und diesen besiegt. Neben der Mythologie hat auch die Drachenfelsbahn maßgeblich dazu beigetragen, dass der Drachenfels schon früh zu einem beliebten Ziel von Touristen aus nah und fern geworden ist.

Am 14.09.1958 ereignete sich der schlimmste Unfall in der Geschichte der Drachenfelsbahn. Damals wurden die Passagierwagen der Bahn teilweise noch von Dampflokomotiven den Berg hochgeschoben. Eine Umstellung auf elektrische Züge war bereits seit 1953 im Gange, aber die Lokomotiven wurden erst nach und nach ersetzt. Durch Überladung des talwärts fahrenden Dampfzuges sowie einem zu geringen Kesseldruck wurde die Lokomotive viel zu schnell. Ein Versuch der mitfahrenden Bremser den Zug mit Handbremsen zu verlangsamen hat in Kombination mit einem Wiederaufbau des Kesseldrucks dazu geführt, dass die Zahnräder der Lokomotive zerstört wurden und die Lokomotive völlig ungebremst den Berg runterraste. In einer Kurve entgleiste sie zusammen mit dem ersten Passagierwagen, der zweite Wagen fuhr ebenfalls mit erheblicher Geschwindigkeit in die Trümmer. 18 Fahrgäste kamen dabei ums Leben, 112 wurden verletzt. Seitdem sind keine Dampflokomotiven mehr eingesetzt worden.

Um an dieses tragische Ereignis zu erinnern und der Opfer zu gedenken ist 2018 an der Talstation der Drachenfelsbahn ein Denkmal errichtet worden. Es besteht aus einer Skulptur von Burkhard Mohr, die den Römischen Schutzgott der Reisenden Merkur darstellt. Elemente der Zahnradbahn sind dabei eingearbeitet. Darüber befindet sich eine Glocke und Darstellungen des Planeten Merkur, darunter eine Gedenktafel mit Informationen.

Im Gebäude der Talstation sind außerdem einige Informationstafeln zur Geschichte der Drachenfelsbahn zu finden. Dort sind auch Informationen und Bilder vom Unfall dokumentiert.

The Drachenfelsbahn is the oldest active cog railway in Germany. Since 1883 it has been running from Königswinter to the summit of the Drachenfels, a mountain peak in the Siebengebirge. It towers 245 meters above the river Rhine, on the summit there is a viewing platform and the remains of a castle. According to the Nibelungen saga, the hero Siegfried fought here with a dragon and defeated it. In addition to the mythology, the Drachenfelsbahn also made a significant contribution to the Drachenfels becoming a popular destination for tourists from near and far in early times.

On September 14th, 1958 the worst accident in the history of the Drachenfelsbahn happened. At that time, some of the railway passenger cars were still pushed up the mountain by steam locomotives. A conversion to electric trains had been under way since 1953, but the locomotives were only gradually replaced. The steam train going down the valley was overloaded and the boiler pressure was too low, making the locomotive move far too fast. An attempt by the brakemen on board to slow down the train with hand brakes, in combination with rebuilding the boiler pressure, resulted in the gears of the locomotive being destroyed and the locomotive racing down the mountain completely unbraked. In a curve, it derailed along with the first passenger car, the second car also drove into the wreckage at considerable speed. 18 passengers died and 112 were injured. Since then, steam locomotives have been stopped being used.

To commemorate this tragic event and to remember the victims, a memorial was erected at the valley station of the Drachenfelsbahn in 2018. It consists of a sculpture by Burkhard Mohr depicting Mercury, the Roman tutelary god of travellers. Elements of the cog railway are incorporated in it. Above is a bell and depictions of the planet Mercury, below is a plaque with information.
