Within St Mary's Church, a colourful effigy of a decorated soldier named John Cooke [Coke] can be found in a niche. He is said to have been murdered by a younger brother in 1632, stabbed to death in the back during an argument about the family estate. Tradition avers that his spirit steps down from the alcove and wanders about the church.

It is claimed on the anniversary of his death John rises and roams the churchyard to check that his brother isn’t buried there, presumably in the hope that if he ever was, he would exact vengeance on him. However, on satisfying himself that he isn’t, the restless spirit returns to his tomb once again.

He has allegedly been seen on a number of occasions wondering through the churchyard.
