The mysterious little tower in the middle of a meadow in Harmelen is a pigeon tower. The tower is popularly known as 'De Duiventil' (the dovecot). The tower stands behind the town centre and belonged to the nearby castle Huize Harmelen. The tower was probably built in the beginning of the 19th century by the then owner of the castle. The tower gave a certain status to the estate of the castle and made the estate 'complete'. The number of pigeons owned by Huize Harmelen varied from year to year. In 1852 the counter stood at around 350 pigeons, ten years later only fifty.
After the death of the ambassador Adriaan de Joncheere, the estate and the pigeon tower fell into disrepair. The pigeon tower's function changed and it was used as a pig shed.
In 1950, the municipality restored the pigeon tower. It turned out that there are only about twenty pigeon towers left in the Netherlands and the tower was included in the national monument list.
