Congregationalists, in the then frontier town of Shelburne, first gathered on Marsh 13, 1769 in a private home and voted to build a their church. The First Congregational Society was formally organized in 1770. Subsequently they built 4 churches, the third of which is on the site of the present church. Construction began in 1845 and dedicated took place in December of that year.
The Greek Revival style First Congregation Church has a recessed portico entrance beneath a pediment supported by two Doric columns and for pilasters. The tall central entrance is flanked by a pair of screened doors. Rising from the center of the gable roof is a multi-tiered steeple which contains a belfry with louvered windows, a pediment and an octagonal spire. The sides of the building have three large rectangular windows.
