“I use action and counteraction, like in music, all the time. Action and counteraction.”
- Louise Nevelson

I’m not a big fan of Louise Nevelson’s work, but the way this particular piece has been integrated into the wall of the lobby of the Juilliard Theater (now called the Peter Jay Sharp Theater) does produce an aesthetically pleasing effect. In fact, it fits in so well that it often goes unnoticed by visitors. The fact that the lobby is not well lit and the piece is painted black doesn’t help. The work is quite large, even by Nevelson’s standards: 48 feet long by over 8 feet high.

Louise Nevelson created Nightsphere-Light in 1969 along with over twenty other pieces for a special exhibition at the Pace Gallery in New York. It was purchased by Howard and Jean Lipman and immediately donated to Juilliard for installation in the theater lobby. The stamp reproduces just a detail of Nightsphere-Light. It was one of five different designs each showing a different Nevelson sculpture. They were issued in the year 2000 to commemorate the abstract artist.
