The surveyor Thomas Pinniger set up many cairns around the Yea District when he surveyed Yea between 1855 and 1856. And as the bronze plaque on the Cairn explains, this is a replica. The plaque reads:

who planned and surveyed the township of Yea 1855-56 also
the Geodetic survey from Alexandra to Tallarook 1859-1872
