Unfortunately, the plaque doesn't indicate why this piece of petrified wood was donated or its source. Just that it was a gift to the Liberal Memorial Library from the R. B. Harkins Family in 1990. I wasn't able to detect any clear rings or bark lines as are common in other specimens of petrified wood. I wonder if it is perhaps a stump that lacked any of the normal features. As with any piece of petrified wood, you can tell from the colors of the rock which minerals were involved in the petrification process. There are several sources of petrified wood in Kansas but not in the immediate area of Liberal.
