"Long thwarted by the conservative parties, this tribute had to wait for the election of a republican communal council, in 1880, and the centenary of the death of the writer in 1884 to succeed. The statue was inaugurated on August 3, 1884, in good weather, already preceded the evening before by a torchlight procession, accompanied by a brass band and illuminations.

On the morning of the inauguration, a salvo of artillery takes place, the reception of the delegations and a distribution of relief to the needy. Jean-Ernest Darbot, mayor of Langres and vice-president of the departmental council of Haute-Marne, receives the Legion of Honor, as a knight, from the hands of the prefect of Haute-Marne, following his appointment to this title, the day before, by decree of the President of the Republic, Jules Grévy.

Le piédestal cylindrique est en pierre du Jura, une sorte de granit très dur dont la coloration est rosée. On peut y lire la dédicace « A DIDEROT / Hommage de ces concitoyens / MDCCCLXXXIV ». Le noms des contemporains associé à ses combats, dont des collaborateurs de l’Encyclopédie, sont gravés sous la corniche et entourés de feuilles de laurier : d'Alembert, Voltaire, Helvétius, Grimm, Condillac, Buffon, Turgot et d'Holbacha . Enfin, des faisceaux ornent sa base.

La statue est inaugurée le 3 août 1884, par beau temps, déjà précédée la veille au soir d'une retraite aux flambeaux, accompagnée d'une fanfare et d'illuminations.

Le matin de l'inauguration, ont lieu une salve d'artillerie, la réception des délégations et une distribution de secours aux indigents. Jean-Ernest Darbot, maire de Langres et vice-président du conseil départemental de Haute-Marne, reçoit la Légion d'honneur, au titre de chevalier, des mains du préfet de la Haute-Marne, à la suite de sa nomination à ce titre, la veille, par décret du président de la République, Jules Grévy.
