An dieser Stelle ist am 4. Oktober 1943 eine zweisitzige Messerschmitt BF 110 der deutschen Wehrmacht von einer amerikanischen Maschine abgeschossen worden. Der Pilot Emil Haupt und sein Bordfunker Leopold Berger kamen dabei ums Leben.

2001 wurde hier erstmals ein Gedenkkreuz aus Holz für die beiden Soldaten errichtet. Wegen Vandalismus und Verfall musste es seitdem mehrfach erneuert werden. Das aktuelle Kreuz stammt vom 10. Februar 2022 und wurde von den Anwohnern Heinz Gieraths und Thomas Radermacher gestiftet. Am Kreuz ist eine Informationstafel mit Fotos der Piloten angebracht. Der Heimatverein Meckenheim e.V. kümmert sich um das Gedenkkreuz.
At this place, on October 4, 1943, a two-seater Messerschmitt BF 110 of the German Wehrmacht was shot down by an American machine. The pilot Emil Haupt and his radio operator Leopold Berger lost their lives.

In 2001, a wooden memorial cross for the two soldiers was erected here for the first time. Due to vandalism and decay, it has had to be renewed several times since then. The current cross dates from February 10, 2022 and was donated by residents Heinz Gieraths and Thomas Radermacher. An information board with photos of the pilots is attached to the cross. The organization Heimatverein Meckenheim e.V. takes care of the memorial cross.
