L'Oratoire...

Chapel of the Brotherhood of Saint Anthony Abbot, guardian of Calvary traditions...

The Oratory...

It was built at the beginning of the 16th century, when Calvi was the seat of Genoese power in Corsica. Its interior architectural layout was strongly modified in the 19th century by the addition of
vaults. A "lavagna" (ornamental lintel) in slate of the XVth representing Saint Anthony welcomes the faithful.

Two statues of the same saint have recently been placed in their historical context: a small Saint Anthony of Pisan manufacture dating from the end of the 14th century, which was probably the first processional statue of the brotherhood, and a second one in a seated position of Ligurian tradition and dated 1440.

A very beautiful triptych painted on wood representing the Crucifixion, from the 15th century, as well as wall frescoes, notably a Crucifixion dated 1513, complete this beautiful ensemble.

The Brotherhood of Saint Anthony Abbot

The exact title of the brotherhood is Confraternity of Saint Anthony Abbot, of the Annunciation and of the Holy Stigmata of Saint Francis. The testimonies of the existence of this brotherhood go back to about the 14th century. At the beginning of the 16th century, the brotherhood built a three-story building in the citadel, the oratory of Sant'Antone Abbate è Beata Nunziata, which is still today the chapel of
which is still today the chapel of the brotherhood. Felix Battistini in his book Calvi in the XVI century describes it as the most alive and powerful brotherhood of the city. Under the chapel of the oratory, two floors were reserved for the reception of the sick, the destitute, the poorest, which is one of the principal functions of the brotherhood. The brotherhood acted then a little like the
Social Security of today...
Moreover, in Corsica, the brotherhoods of Saint Anthony are also known under the name of Sant'Antone in the alloghju, which testifies to the function of reception of these brotherhoods. In addition to the participation in the various religious ceremonies of the liturgical year, the brotherhood of Saint Anthony has for main function the mutual aid between its members, it can bring a financial support to one of its fellow-members, to the family of a disappeared fellow-member, to a family calvaise in need with, always a concern of
family in need with, always a concern of discretion. In case of need, the brotherhood takes charge of the expenses related to the burial of one of its confreres.
Charity without boasting, here is the meaning of the brotherhoods in Calvi and in Corsica, in a general way.
Even today, it happens that the confreres of Saint Anthony welcome from time to time, people who do not know where they are anymore, sometimes these people just need to be listened to, sometimes a warm welcome is enough.
The brotherhood of Saint Anthony participates, together with the brotherhood of Saint Erasmus, in the religious life of the city, continually reflecting on the evolution of Calvary customs in the purest respect of tradition.
