Located in the Ozark National Forest, Camp Hedges housed company 743 of the Civilian Conservation Corps. This camp existed from 1933 to the end of the program in 1942. According to the sign, upwards of 2200 men passed through this camp during its lifetime.

The CCC built bridges and dams, trails, roads and campsites throughout the Sylamore District of the forest. This includes the small dam on Gunner Creek that forms Gunner Pool along with the campsites along North Sylamore Creek. They also assisted in extinguishing forest fires and other conservation work in the national forest.

The Gunner Pool Recreation Area has also appeared on a U.S. postage stamp. In 2002, stamps were issued for each state that resembled vintage ‘Greetings from…’ post cards. The upper left corner of the Greetings from Arkansas stamp showed the bluffs along North Sylamore Creek near its confluence with Gunner Creek within the confines of the recreation area.

And how does a town get a name like Fifty-Six? Accounts vary but apparently the Federal Government rejected the town’s initial naming request for a post office. Fifty-Six was either the town’s second choice (or misconstrued as a second choice) or assigned arbitrarily and supposedly represented the town’s school district. Or maybe it was some bureaucratic foul up. Nevertheless, it exists and has a population of a little over 150.
