The border between Belgium and the Netherlands is visually supported in the landscape by 369 cast-iron poles. Most of these poles were ordered in 1843. They stand from the three-country point in Vaals to the Zwin. After the separation between the Northern Netherlands and the Southern Netherlands in 1830, the waiting for the establishment of new boundaries until the division of the estate was settled was diplomatic. It was not until 19 April 1839 that the new border line was settled with the signing of the London Treaty.

The peace treaty stipulated that Belgian and Dutch Commissioners in Maastricht should further refine the border between the two countries. Between 1839 and 1843 there was meeting. The border treaty of 1664 was the guiding principle. He then confirmed the file that was agreed on the Peace of Münster in 1648. Things that were no longer clear were seen on the site. The municipal boundary posts also helped. The border was regulated in more detail in the treaty of 5 November 1842. With that, not all demarcation problems had yet been resolved. This happened in a border treaty that was closed on 8 August 1843, the Traktaat of Maastricht.
In that Traktaat the boundary between both countries is described in three sections. The first department describes the border from Prussia to the Meuse. The second section goes across the border from the Meuse to the Scheldt, while the third section describes the border between the Scheldt and the North Sea. A separate clause in the second section deals with the Baarle-Nassau and Baarle-Hertog enclaves.
