Prachtig pandje, dat oude stadhuis in de binnenstad, waar tegenwoordig Stadsmuseum Woerden in zit. Het oogt zo gezellig met de rode luiken ervoor. En dat past goed in het straatje met ook bijvoorbeeld het terras van Plein 7. Maar zo gezellig als het nu is, was het er heel vroeger niet. Want in het straatje gebeurden gruwelijke dingen.
Ga maar eens staan voor Stadsmuseum, dat vroeger het Stedehuys heette, en kijk omhoog. Aan de gevel zie je twee leeuwenkoppen en die zijn niet hetzelfde. De linker leeuwenkop heeft namelijk een blok hout in z’n bek. Niet voor niets, want er zit een gat in. Daar doorheen kon vroeger een paal gestoken worden die dan over de weg hing. En dat was niet om de was aan op te hangen of te flyeren voor een of ander evenement. Aan die paal kwam een touw met een lus… Jawel, daar werden dus mensen opgehangen!
De veroordeling van ‘boeven’ werd trouwens binnenin het pand gedaan. De eerste grote ruimte in het museum na de balieruimte, daar werd het recht gesproken vroeger. De veroordeling kon celstraf zijn. Makkelijk, want in het pand zat ook een cel. Dat is nu de kleine kantoorruimte achter de balie. De galg was dus ook een optie en in Woerden hadden ze nog een fijn strafmiddel… De schandpaal.
Het is bijna uniek in Nederland, maar je leest het goed: Woerden heeft nog steeds een authentieke schandpaal. Je zou er zo voorbijlopen als je het niet weet, maar het is het zandstenen paaltje met plateautje aan de rechter voorzijde van het Stadsmuseum. Links de galgenbalk, rechts de schandpaal, die er al zit sinds 1567. Gezellig hè.

Beautiful building, that old town hall in the city centre, which is now home to Stadsmuseum Woerden. It looks so cosy with the red shutters in front of it. And it fits well in the street with, for example, the terrace of Plein 7. But it wasn't as cosy as it is now. Because horrible things happened in the street.
Just stand in front of Stadsmuseum, which used to be called Stedehuys, and look up. On the façade you will see two lion heads, but they are not the same. The left lion's head has a block of wood in its mouth. Not for nothing, because there is a hole in it. In the past, a pole could be stuck through it and hung over the road. And that was not to hang up the washing or to fly flyers for some event. A rope with a loop was attached to the pole... Yes, people were hung up there!
By the way, the sentencing of 'crooks' was done inside the building. The first large room in the museum after the counter room, that is where justice was pronounced in the past. The sentence could be imprisonment. Easy, because the building also had a cell. That is now the small office space behind the desk. The gallows was also an option and in Woerden they had another fine means of punishment ... the pillory.
It is almost unique in the Netherlands, but you read it correctly: Woerden still has an authentic pillory. You would walk past it if you did not know about it, but it is the sandstone post with a small platform at the right-hand front of the City Museum. On the left the gallows beam, on the right the pillory, which has been there since 1567. Cosy, isn't it?
