This simple eternal flame, a small cauldron sitting on a short base, is part of a memorial to commemorate the raising of an American Flag on each day the fifty-two American citizens were held hostage in the country of Iran, 1979-1980. And to the crew of an ill-fated military operation to rescue the 52 American hostages held in Tehran ends with eight U.S. servicemen dead with no hostages rescued.
Behind the flame is a memorial with a bronze eagle and a plaque dedicated to those eight servicemen. The other plaque, sitting on the ground to the front of the cauldron, was presented to Hillcrest Memorial Park by the citizens of Scranton to commemorate the vigil of raising the 444 flags.
