Het Planetarium Eise Eisinga in de stad Franeker in de provincie Friesland werd gebouwd door Eise Eisinga tussen 1774 en 1781 aan het plafond in zijn eigen huiskamer.
Aangedreven door een slingeruurwerk, dat op de zolder is gebouwd en in de kledingkast naast de bedstee uitkomt, geeft het astronomisch uurwerk sinds de voltooiing in 1781 de actuele positie van de planeten aan via de plafondwijzerplaat en is hiermee het oudste werkende planetarium ter wereld.
Geschiedenis
Toen zich in 1774 een conjunctie van de maan en de planeten Mercurius, Venus, Mars en Jupiter zou voordoen, gaf dominee Eelko Alta uit Bozum een boekje uit, waarin hij voorspelde dat deze hemellichamen op 8 mei 1774 op elkaar zouden botsen. De aarde zou hierdoor uit haar baan worden geslingerd en zou in de zon verbranden. Over deze voorspelling ontstond in Friesland discussie.
Om te laten zien dat er geen botsing zou ontstaan, besloot Eisinga in het plafond van de woonkamer van zijn huis uit 1768 een werkend schaalmodel van het zonnestelsel te bouwen. Een op de zolder boven de bedstee en het plafond aangebracht raderwerk regelt met een regulateur de omlooptijden van de toen bekende planeten: Mercurius, Venus, de aarde, Mars, Jupiter en Saturnus. De planeten hangen als bollen in de kamer waarbij ze aan de zonzijde goudkleurig beschilderd zijn. De aarde is voorzien van een cirkelende maan. Daarnaast is het planetarium voorzien van een planisfeer en wijzerplaten voor onder meer de schijngestalten van de maan, zonsopkomst en ondergang, de weekdag en het jaartal.
Eisinga dacht de werkzaamheden in zes maanden te kunnen klaren, maar pas in 1781 was het planetarium voltooid. De hoogleraar Jean Henri van Swinden, die hem bezocht, was zeer enthousiast over de geleverde prestatie. Nog in het jaar van voltooiing werd de planeet Uranus ontdekt. Voor deze buitenplaneet was in het planetarium van Eisinga geen plaats meer.
Eisinga publiceerde in 1784 een Nauwkeurige Beschrijving en Afteekeningen van de uitwendige vertooning en de inwendige zamenstelling van het gansche Planetarium. Koning Willem I bezichtigde het planetarium in 1818 en kocht het in 1825 aan voor de Nederlandse staat.
Museum
In 1859 werd het planetarium door de Nederlandse staat geschonken aan de stad Franeker. De stad Franeker stelde het open als museum. Het museum is uitgebreid met twee naastliggende panden, waar zich voorheen een koffiebranderij en bakkerij bevonden. In deze gebouwen bevindt zich de ingang, een vaste tentoonstelling, wisseltentoonstelling, een filmzaal en horeca.

The Planetarium Eise Eisinga in the city of Franeker in the province of Friesland was built by Eise Eisinga between 1774 and 1781 on the ceiling in his own living room.
Powered by a pendulum clock built in the attic and opening into the wardrobe next to the box bed, the astronomical clock since its completion in 1781 has indicated the current position of the planets via the ceiling dial, making it the oldest working planetarium in the world.
History
When a conjunction of the moon and the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter would occur in 1774, Reverend Eelko Alta from Bozum published a booklet in which he predicted that these heavenly bodies would collide on May 8, 1774. This would throw the earth out of orbit and burn up in the sun. Discussion arose in Friesland about this prediction.
To show that there would be no collision, Eisinga decided to build a working scale model of the solar system in the ceiling of the living room of his 1768 house. A gear mounted in the attic above the box bed and the ceiling controls the orbital times of the then known planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The planets hang like spheres in the room, where they are painted gold on the sunny side. The Earth has a circling moon. In addition, the planetarium is equipped with a planisphere and dials for, among other things, the phases of the moon, sunrise and sunset, the day of the week and the year.
Eisinga thought he could complete the work in six months, but the planetarium was not completed until 1781. The professor Jean Henri van Swinden, who visited him, was very enthusiastic about the achievement. The planet Uranus was discovered in the year of completion. There was no room for this outer planet in Eisinga's planetarium.
Eisinga published in 1784 an Accurate Description and Drawings of the Outer Display and the Inner Composition of the Entire Planetarium. King Willem I visited the planetarium in 1818 and bought it in 1825 for the Dutch state.
Museum
In 1859 the planetarium was donated by the Dutch state to the city of Franeker. The city of Franeker opened it up as a museum. The museum has been expanded with two adjacent buildings, which previously housed a coffee roaster and bakery. These buildings house the entrance, a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibition, a cinema and catering.
