The plaque says, "Directly across the street stood Washington Hall. The Institute's first building erected 1894 by Jacob Tome (1810-1898) founder and benefactor of The Tome School"
Taken from the guidebook, "WASHINGTON HALL (L), on Main St., is a large brick building that houses the Town Schools of the Jacob Tome Institute. In the center of the front facade, carved in the brownstone caps at the base of the two engaged columns, are reliefs of Tome and his wife. Opposite the hall are three granite buildings also belonging to the school."
