Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore relocated to a newly-built main campus on McNally Street in which the structures form very large and uniquely-walled canyons. The undulating, angular, glass façades of its inward-facing buildings create a central, open air atrium and alleyways covered by a white wavy roof fly.
This multi-award-winning project from RSP Architects was completed in 2008. Total floor space is 35,000 m2 among the six seven-story structures. The firm describes it:
Part of an international competition, the design creates a massive “black box” with everything turned inside-out for maximum porosity between the campus and streets. The design becomes a part of art-making. Students are engaged in continuous dialogue with the public and get to experience everything from all angles.
The challenge was to design a campus that expressed the college’s spirit and embraced the city’s diversity. From glass panels, to courtyards and alleyways, all spaces were carefully detailed to offer varied ways for interaction, reflection and inspiration, a result of a strong collective team effort.
Official office hours for the school are 9:00AM to 5:00PM, though visitors are welcome to the property outside of those times, too.
