Smithsonian Art Inventory

"A youthful Confederate soldier stands wearing a hip-length jacket, trousers and gaiters. His wide-brimmed hat is pushed back from his face. A bedroll, large haversack and smaller bag are slung across his shoulders. A bayonet is strapped to a belt at his waist. He is holding his rifle at parade rest, proper left leg forward, proper right leg supported by a tree trunk. The sculpture is mounted on a tiered base, with stepped, rough cut lower section.

(On front of base, raised letters:)
TO THE MEMORY OF OUR
CONFEDERATE DEAD, BURIED
IN SCOTTSVILLE CEMETERY

(On back of base:)
"THEIR GLORY SHALL NEVER DIE
THEIR EPITAPHS ARE WRITTEN IN
THE HEARTS OF MANKIND
AND WHEREVER THERE IS
SPEECH OF NOBLE DEEDS
THEIR NAMES SHALL BE
HELD IN REMEMBERANCE."
