"Las primeras pruebas documentales se fechan en el s. XI y en el s. XIII. Con la Carta Puebla de Valdés, otorgada por el rey Alfonso X “El Sabio”, Luarca se consolida también como puerto ballenero.
Desde el s. XIV la villa se desarrolla como puerto comercial y a finales del s. XVIII se convierte en el tercero en importancia de Asturias. Hasta mediados de ese siglo también contaba con un astillero para la construcción de barcos. El velero “La Favorita”, armado en ese mismo astillero, ostenta el récord de velocidad de un velero en cruzar el Océano Atlántico, realizando la travesía en tan sólo 17 días."

Since the s. XIV the town was developed as a commercial port and at the end of the s. XVIII becomes the third in importance of Asturias. Until the middle of that century it also had a shipyard for the construction of boats. The sailboat "La Favorita", built in the same shipyard, holds the speed record for a sailboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean, making the crossing in just 17 days."
