The Hanover Dam, also known as the Saugeen River Dam, is located in Hanover, Ontario. It is one of 7 dams on the main Saugeen River. The dam is made up of three large concrete steps which the water flows down.
On the north side the dam is a large concrete overflow. The south side of the river is a public trail called Karl "Speck" Wilken Park.
There is unfortunately not much information on the history of the dam itself available online. The dam was likely built as flood control measure some time in the 1960s following Hurricane Hazel. There also was likely a dam previous to this one used for milling by pioneers to this area.
The dams future is up for debate, as in 2019, the Truax Dam on the Saugeen River in Walkerton was demolished for safety and fish conservation. In 2015, the town of Hanover was approached about making a new power generating station on the river, whether this will cause the destruction of the dam or restoration if the project were to move on is unknown.
