LEED is an evaluation and certification system that can be used to determine the sustainability performance of buildings. LEED stands for 'Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design'. Established in 1998 by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is the most widely used sustainability tool in the United States. This is mainly because LEED is often chosen for government projects there. LEED is a scoring system that uses a checklist. The score determines whether the building receives a basic certification, silver, gold or platinum. This certification is in the hands of the LEED committee. In addition to new construction, LEED can also be used for renovation or transformation of existing buildings (LEED-Existing Buildings). LEED assesses on the following elements: “sustainable site development”, “water conservation”, “energy efficiency”, “material selection”, “indoor environment quality”, “innovation” and design and “regional priority”.
