Near Margraten is the American cemetery along the Rijksweg Maastricht-Vaals.
Since November 1944, this cemetery has been the final resting place for 8301 American soldiers. The huge field filled with white marble crosses reminds us of the often young soldiers, who gave their lives for our freedom in the Second World War."
The entrance consists of a long driveway where you end up at the parking lot.
As you approach the entrance to the place of honour, you will find the visitors/information building on the right and the museum on the left.
In the museum you can see cards carved into the wall. These maps show the operations that took place from the invasion of Normandy to the end of the war.
In the middle of the "court of honour" is an approximately 40 meter long water feature This pond is accompanied on both sides by the Walls of Missing, two long marble walls.
In these two huge long marble walls are carved the names of 1722 missing persons. An asterisk by a name indicates that the remains of this fallen liberator were found and buried at a later date.
At the end of the pond is a bronze statue "a woman mourning the death of her son, surrounded by pigeons"
Behind the statue is a more than 30 meter high tower. Here you will find a chapel and a carillon.
After climbing the stairs on either side of the tower, the actual cemetery follows. This is overwhelmingly large and consists of sixteen planes with about 500 graves per plane
The story of our liberators must be passed on to future generations.
