Op een klein pleintje in Rijssen vlak voor het stadhuis staat een bronzen beeldje van een mannetje met een breede lach.
Hij heeft een soort schaal in zijn hand.
Een toevallige voorbijganger vraagt me of ik een familielid ben, omdat ik het beeldje op de foto zet.
Nee, dat niet ik word getroffen door de breede grijns en vind het gewoon een mooi beeldje.
De man verteld me over Janne met de panne.
'Dit jaar, in april 2021, is het 100 jaar geleden dat de legendarische stadsomroeper Jan Nijland (Bootn-Jan) de slagknuppel en koperen bekken ter hand nam om het gemeentenieuws bekend te maken. Nijland zou dat tot 1954 blijven doen. Toen werd hij als stadsomroeper opgevolgd door zijn zoon.
Het bronzen beeld van stadsomroeper Jan met de Panne is gemaakt door de Urker beeldhouwer Piet Brouwer en werd is indertijd op initiatief van de toenmalige Kulturele Raad Rijssen geplaatst voor het pand Haarstraat 16. Dat pand was indertijd het notariskantoor en Jan met de Panne trad ook altijd op om openbare verkopen van huizen aan te kondigen. Bij de huizenveiling bij Café Spekhorst trad Bootn-Jan ook altijd op als veilingmeester. Inmiddels is de klassieke notariswoning gesneuveld en was de plek voor het beeld van de stadsomroeper totaal betekenisloos geworden.
Het beeldje staat nu voor het stadhuis.'
