Alter Schwede is called the oldest town house in Wismar. The building was built around 1380 in the late brick Gothic style on the Wismar market square. The term Old Swede came about later, however, in connection with the coming to terms with the Swedish era in Wismar in the 19th century, which is also referred to by one of the Swedish heads in the portal above the entrance door.
The stepped gable structure is characteristic of the patrician house. At the time, the ground floor contained residential and business premises. The other floors were used as storage. In 1878 an inn was opened in the building for the first time. During the GDR era in 1977, the building was extensively restored. Today it is used as a restaurant.
