The new cemetery, although the name suggests otherwise, was founded more than 90 years ago. Landscape architect Poortman managed to convince the municipality with his design for a cemetery fitted into a forest area. Construction began in 1930, but it would take until 1936 before the first funeral took place.
In 1932, a gatehouse designed by the municipal architect Wessels was added to the cemetery. The hourglass sits in one of the stained glass windows of that building. The designer wanted to show with the symbol of the hourglass that life is finite. After turning over the hourglass, the symbolism is that of the resurrection.
