Martin (Jan Tríska), a watchmaker, starts his mandatory two-year military service. To his dismay, he discovers that he has been assigned to the paratroopers, which entails training for jumps from a training tower and preparation for jumps from a plane. As a result of his efforts to avoid training, the reluctant young man becomes the laughing stock of his comrades-in-arms and is listed as a problem soldier by his superiors. In addition, he complains in a letter to his father (Jaroslav Marvan), who tries to influence his son's assignment in the unit by bribing him with a goose, which does not improve the situation. Martin eventually makes it to the kitchen, but even the cooks are not spared from parachute training.

Hodinár Martin (Jan Tríska) nastupuje dríve povinnou dvouletou vojenskou službu. Ke svému zdešení bohužel zjistí, že byl pridelen k parašutistum, což obnáší trénink seskoku ze cvicné veže a prípravu na seskoky z letadla. Neprubojný mladík se tak díky snaze vyhnout výcviku stává tercem posmechu u svých kamarádu ve zbrani a u nadrízených je zapsán jako problémový voják. Navíc si v dopise postežuje svému otci (Jaroslav Marvan), který se snaží úplatkem v podobe husy ovlivnit zarazení svého syna u jednotky, což situaci nezlepší. Martin se nakonec dostane ke kuchyni, ale ani kuchari nejsou ušetreni parašutistického výcviku.
