In 1990, LKAB had its 100th anniversary of mining. On that occasion, a piece of rock with iron ore was placed in the town overlooking the mine. A small memorial plaque with the text "Memorial stone LKAB`s 100th anniversary 1990" can be seen on the rock.

The Kiruna mine is the largest and most modern underground iron ore mine in the world and owned by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB).
Mining began in 1890 and since then the mine has produced over 950 million tons of ore. The ore body in the Kiruna mine is 4 km (2.5 mi) long, 80 meters (120 feet) to 120 meters (390 feet) thick and has a depth of up to 2 km (1.2 mi).
