Aermotor - Hill County Northbound Safety Rest Area - Abbott, TX - Windmills on Waymarking.com

There is no indication as to the provenance of this Aermotor, but it is in excellent condition and could be fairly new: "San Angelo" on the tail may be a clue, given that Aermotor relocated there in the 19802. It's attached to a cistern and the recycled water that is pushed through the system probably waters the gardens in front of the restrooms.

While there's no museum here per se, these Safety Areas were designed to replace spartan traditional highway rest areas and provide storm shelters along with the facilities that we take for granted. Inside each one, though, are interpretive signs, interactive displays and machines to play county-related videos. They're a good place to learn a little something about the area, and in this case, you're standing in Abbott, TX, birthplace of Willie Nelson, who is also the subject of one of the signs here. Nearby is another for the Aermotor, providing background as to its origins, its battles with Don Quixote, and its worldwide use including here in Hill County.
