For over 40 years, the names Lunt and Fontanne dominated American theater. Married in 1922, they almost always performed together, in fact at one time it was even written into their contract. The recipients of numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, they also have a New York theater named for them and have appeared on their own postage stamp.

Lynn Fontanne was born just outside of London in 1887. Showing an early aptitude for acting, she was given roles in London plays while still in her teens. Throughout the 1910s, her blossoming career included roles on both sides of the Atlantic and on tour. In the early 1920s, she met and married American stage actor Alfred Lunt and the rest, as they say, is history.

Though wooed by Hollywood, the Lunts preferred the live stage and only appeared in a few films and occasionally on television. They maintained a summer residence in Wisconsin (Alfred Lunt’s home state) where they eventually retired. They are buried together in Milwaukee’s Forest Home Cemetery.
