DE: 1975 wurde die Tank- und Rastanlage Nievenheim gebaut. Die katholische Kirchengemeinde in Dormagen-Delrath, der Teile des Geländes gehörten, wurde vom Land zum Verkauf genötigt. Der Entschluss die erste Autobahn-Kapelle im Rheinland auf dem verbleibendem Grundstück in unmittelbarer Nähe der Raststätte zu errichten war schnell gefasst.

So konnte dann mit zusätzlichen privaten Mitteln am 27. November 1975 der Grundstein für den kleinen, sechseckigen Backsteinbau gelegt werden. Der Innenraum hat ebenfalls ein sechseckiges Muster, welches zusätzliche Nischen erlaubt. Ausführender Architekt war Carl Hecking, ein ehemaliger Mitarbeiter des bekannten Kirchenarchitekten Dominikus Böhm. Die Plastik des Erzengels Raphael schuf der Bildhauer Jochem Pechau, der Schutzpatron der Reisenden wurde von ihm als einfacher Reisender mit Stab und Trinkflasche ausgearbeitet.
