The City of Springfield's Fresh Paint mural program has been resumed in 2021 after a one year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic. Ten new murals were painted by nationally known artists. Five murals are located in downtown Springfield while 5 murals are located in the predominately African-American neighborhood of Mason Square.
Ryan Christenson, a muralist from Connecticut who goes by the name ARCY, has created this mural depicting six Italian-American friends on the wall of La Fiorentina Pastry Shop in the predominately Italian-American South End neighborhood of Springfield. The 120' long and 7' high mural depicts six elderly Italian-American friends, cumpari, sitting on a park bench conduction an animated conversation. Among the six figures are the two grandfathers of the owner of La Fiorentina.
All figures are painted in sepia tones. From left to right the first and second men are facing each other and talking to each other while using hand gestures. The third, fourth and fifth men are looking over their shoulders to the right and smiling, apparently overhearing the nearby conversation. The sixth man is looking down, unaware of the others. He is possibly sleeping.
