DE: In der Brühler Giesler-Galerie befindet sich seit 2006 das Feuergitter eines mittelalterlichen Ofens zur Herstellung von Keramik. Der am Franziskanerhof ausgegrabene Ofen wurde um 1300 errichtet und war bis zum großen Brühler Stadtbrand im Jahr 1530 in Betrieb.
Aus thermischen und auch statischen Gründen befand sich der Brennraum des etwa 5m mal 3m großen Ofens zum Teil unter der Erde. Aufgrund der bis zu 1200° Celsius hohen Temperaturen, die zum Brennen von wasserdichtem Steinzeug benötigt wurden, verglasten die Sandpartikel und verdampften die im Brennmaterial Holz eingelagerten Salze, was im Laufe der Zeit zu einer grünlichen Glasbeschichtung der Ofenwände führte. Das hier aufgestellte Feuergitter hatte die Aufgabe, die heiße Luft, die sich in der Feuerung sammelte, im Brennraum aufzufächern und somit gleichmäßiger zu verteilen sowie den direkten Kontakt der Keramik mit den Flammen der Feuerung zu verhindern. Unter dem Gitter waren zudem zwei Röhren, die heisse Luft über den Boden der Brennkammer führten. Um den hohen Temperaturen standhalten zu können wurde das Gitter ebenfalls aus Ton hergestellt.
Das ausgestellte Gitter befindet sich in einer Vitrine im Erdgeschoss des Einkaufszentrums. Links daneben ist eine Schautafel mit dem Bild des ausgegrabenen Ofens und ein erklärender Text angebracht. Besichtigt werden kann das Gitter während der Öffnungszeiten des Einkaufszentrums.

EN: The fire grate of a medieval furnace for the production of ceramics has been in the Giesler gallery in Brühl since 2006. The furnace unearthed at the Franziskanerhof was built around 1300 and was in operation until the great fire in Brühl in 1530.
For thermal and static reasons, the combustion chamber of the approximately 5m by 3m large furnace was partly underground. Due to the temperatures of up to 1200° Celsius that were required to burn waterproof stoneware, the sand particles vitrified and the salts stored in the wood fuel evaporated, which over time led to a greenish glass coating on the furnace walls. The fire grate set up here had the task of fanning out the hot air that collected in the furnace in the combustion chamber and thus distributing it more evenly, as well as preventing direct contact of the ceramic with the flames of the furnace. There were also two tubes under the grate that conducted hot air over the floor of the combustion chamber. In order to be able to withstand the high temperatures, the grid was also made of clay.
The grate on display is in a showcase on the ground floor of the shopping center. To the left of it is a display board with a picture of the unearthed furnace and an explanatory text. The grate can be viewed during the shopping center's opening hours.
