At this point the river is very close to the point where it discharges into the Humber Estuary. Because the Estuary is tidal the water can flow back up the River Hull in storm conditions and cause flooding.

When this is likely to happen the surge barrier is lowered to stop the water flowing back up the river,

The area around here had a number of docks and shipbuilding yards. Over time this industry declined and the area has been subject to a number of regeneration projects. The Waterfront Communities Project has placed a number of blue plaques around here with information about the area.
