The Martinsbrunnen in the Graubünden canton capital Chur is located in the old town on Martinsplatz in front of the tower of the Martinskirche.

shape
It is the only fountain in Chur to have a standing figure, that of Martin von Tours as an armor bearer with Chur's city coat of arms on the shield. The fields of the hexagonal fountain basin are decorated with reliefs, each showing pairs of signs of the zodiac.

story
The fountain is first documented in 1556. In 1716 it was almost completely rebuilt from Scalära stone. The year 1716 is given in the figure of the ram, the initials IW engraved between the digits stand for Johann Wankmüller, a stonemason from the Allgäu. The scales have the information HLCBM for the architect Hans Luzi Cleric, BM for builders.

The sculptor Alexander Bianchi recreated the statue in 1909/10. The original, on which the copy is closely based, is in the Rhaetian Museum just a few hundred meters away.
